A Southwestern adjunct professor has just published another novel, this one focusing on Christian nationalism and the dangers inherent in mixing politics and religion. Glen Robinson, PhD, adjunct professor in communication, has just released Sola Scriptura, his 28th book and the third in a series that he has co-written with prolific Adventist author Céleste Perrino, who lives in Vermont.
“This book had its origin in a trip Glen and I took to the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. during a communicator’s conference we attended together,” Perrino writes in the author’s notes of the book. “As we strolled through the exhibits looking at all the fabulous manuscripts, we hatched the idea of writing a book about a lost biblical book and tied it to the idea of ‘sola scriptura’: scriptures only.”
The premise of the book is that the wife of a televangelist collapses while on TV and is caught up in vision, claiming Jesus is calling for America to return to its Christian roots and rid the country of its nonbelievers. The message catches on with conservative Christians, especially with presidential hopeful Evan Goodman, who takes the idea and launches it into a national campaign. Not everyone agrees with the message, however. With the country polarized, violence strikes. Another message comes, presumably from Jesus, telling them evidence for the call will come if they find a missing book of the Bible. That search leads the book’s heroes to the Vatican, to Germany, to Jordan, then to battle-torn Syria.
“The book is intended to entertain,” says Robinson, “but more importantly, to inspire and to lead the reader to a better understanding of our Bible and why we believe what we believe.” Robinson explains that the partnership took two years of extensive research and long-distance cooperative writing to complete the project. Today it is finally finished.
Readers can find Sola Scriptura at the Texas Adventist Book Center and as both a paperback and ebook at Amazon.com.
